Update on Shaelyn

Shaelyn was going to be readmitted into the Children's Hospital last week, but ended up in emerg late Wednesday with severe pain in her lower back.  She was admitted and put on morphine for the evening and the following day.

With several more doctors and tests, one specialist found an area in her lower spine, which seems to be the focus point.  He is confident that Shaelyn has a Lumbosacral Facet Joint issue, as well as, nerve compression.  Unfortunately, this issue didn't show up on her spine MRI, but I understand typically it doesn't.  This condition would explain several symptoms Shaelyn has been experiencing, severe pain, weakness, numbing, tingling and other problems.  They will be doing a spinal procedure on Tuesday under anesthetic, which will include a block followed by a steroid injected into the area to reduce inflammation.

The severe pain that Shaelyn experiences, prevents her to put weight on her legs to walk.  Hopefully, if we can get the pain under control, we can move towards her walking with physio treatments and other suggested therapies.  She will also be connected with the Pain Clinic at the Children's for support.

Her back will be extremely sore after the procedure for a couple of days, but she said "bring it on" in her own words.  "I have had pain for so long, if I know this procedure will help, let's do it".

Thanks again for the support, all the emails, phone calls and cards, teddy bears, etc.   Praying that this is a step towards recovery for Shaelyn....it's been a long journey for her and our family.
